SIR - Philip Bushill-Matthews , MEP, doesnt consider Yugoslavia, Hungary or Czechoslovakia as part of Europe - but regardless of his blinkered view of what constitutes Europe, would he kindly explain why a member country of the EU has UN troops stationed along a demarcation line to protect it and why that member country, having secured membership of the EU, promptly voted against the solution the EU had brokered to bring peace to the country and its neighbour?

As a result, British UN troops are still in place to provide protection. This simply demonstrates that the EU is a talking shop. When the crunch comes, it cannot even bring peace between a member country and a country that wishes to join the EU - and outside agencies either NATO or the UN have to maintain the peace. That country is Cyprus, just in case Philip Bushill-Matthews needs reminding of the fact.

MARK STARR,

Leigh Sinton.
