Elgar Technology College's latest celebration night recognised the talents and achievements of students over the past academic year.

The evening, at the Bilford Road school, Perdiswell, gave students awards for excelling in individual subjects and sport. There was also recognition for work with the school council, for citizenship and attendance.

Music was provided by student Cherry-Ann Yeomans, who sung You Are Not Alone.

The guest speaker was Worcester News and Berrow's Worcester Journal editor Stewart Gilbert, who paid tribute to a "committed and talented team" working at the school. He said that the Press had a duty to report good news and bad, as the Berrow's Worcester Journal had been doing for more than 300 years.

He said: "In one hundred years' time, where else will your grandchildren find out about you and what you have been up to? In the local Press.

"Where else will they be able to find out how great Elgar Technology College became as a respected centre of learning?

"It was not long ago that Elgar College was making the headlines for all the wrong reasons. But not any more. Now it is making them for the right reasons.

"Reports on great progress, features on innovative initiatives, picture spreads on social activities - the proms.

"Elgar is on a roll as far as good news is concerned and our coverage reflects this.

"And this is something that social researchers will be reading about in 300 years time."
