HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY - The society opened seven country gardens for the National Garden Scheme on June 18. The following Wednesday members visited the garden at Gladderbrook Farm, High Oak and on June 23 a big band summer ball was held in aid of the Air Ambulance.

On July 2, president Derek Walker opened his garden for the NGS and club members set off on a trip to Alnwick, Northumberland. They visited the Castle Gardens, which has the largest treehouse in Europe, and the following day went on a boat trip to the Farne Islands followed by a fancy dress dinner.

The final visit was to Harlow Carr gardens, recently taken over by the Royal Horticultural Society and restored to their former glory.

The society's next event is the annual show at Astley Village Hall on Saturday, August 5 at 3pm. Members are reminded to send their entries to secretary Robin Saunders by July 31.
