PHIL Brick made a triumphant return to judo with gold at the West Of England Open Championships, with Katherine Lloyd Jones adding another gold and their Samurai Judo Club colleagues notching 11 more medals.

Brick was one of the club's most skilful players back in the 1980's and has recently returned to training.

He quickly got back into the swing of things with series of maximum point wins to gain his place in the final.

There he produced a super throw to defeat clubmate Paul Clarke, who had shown fine form in the other side of the draw.

In the men's lightweights, 14 year-old Tom Walker was again doing well against much older opposition and reached the final before losing to a British international.

Ryan Pitcock had to move up a weight group on the day and did very well to win the bronze.

Becky Holmes worked her way into the final of the ladies' middleweights before losing to another international player, and Annabel Webb had some good wins in the heavyweights other way to the bronze.

There was an open weight category in both men's and women's sections.

Despite being very light, Brick did well, including a good win against a third level black belt 15 kilos heavier than himself on his way to the bronze.

Homes and Webb also won bronzes in the ladies' open.

In the juniors, nothing could stop Katherine Lloyd Jones as she stormed to the gold.

Sarah Biles also did well, recovering from a couple of minor errors to take the bronze.

There were further bronzes for David Hadley and Amy Millington.

Meanwhile, Kelly Edwards came agonisingly close to a medal in the European Cadet Championships in Hungary, finishing fifth.

The 15-year-old, who has only recently moved up from under 44 kilos to under 48 kilos, was up against 26 players, each champion of their own country.

Edwards will still be young enough to enter the competition again next year, when she aims to come back even stronger.
