LAW breakers beware, a rookie policewoman has just set a new record in South Worcestershire after making 46 arrests in her first ten weeks on the beat.

PC Katie Curtis, 24, joined West Mercia Constabulary in January this year and first went on patrol with her mentor, PC Pete Myatt, on May, 8. She went on to make all her arrests in just 40 shifts.

Katie is a former pupil of the Chase High School in Malvern and has apprehended criminals all over the force area, including some closer to home in Worcester, Droitwich, Pershore, Malvern and Evesham.

Although she still requires periodic training, Katie can now go out and work on her own in the community, which PC Myatt believes she will benefit from hugely.

He said: "She is more than ready to go out on her own. It is not just about the number of arrests she has made, but it is also about her overall performance and commitment to serving our communities."

Katie used to worked in various positions for the National Health Service for a number of years and explains that she took the change of direction because she wanted to do her part in making our communities safer.

She said: "I just hate sitting around and getting bored. I don't think that is ever going to happen when I'm on police duty because I can get out and deal with people in all sorts of situations. I enjoy the work in making our communities safer."

Violence obviously goes hand in hand with police work and Katie got a taste of that fact during the World Cup last month, when she and her partner had drinks glasses thrown at them in Worcester.

She added: "Strangely that was more alarming than two separate incidents in which we disarmed two men, one with a bottle, who came at us despite CS spray being used on him and one with a butterfly knife."
