SIR - I am amazed at the actions of Israel at the present time. Since I visited Auschwitz in 1951, I have always had a great deal of sympathy for Jewish people and their problems. Unfortunately, in the case of Israel, there are some important issues which have to be faced. In the first place it should not be forgotten that Israel itself was created by a mixture of terrorism and the urgent need to find homes for those made homeless by the Holocaust.

Britain and America played the biggest part in seeing Zionism as the answer. The result of the decision to create Israel was the uprooting of a huge number of Palestinians from their homes.

Israel, by its massive destruction of Lebanon, is adding to the problem. If the millions spent on this offensive had been spent on the displaced people in the region perhaps the Israeli people would have been more secure.

Our Government, as usual, lines up alongside George Bush and his cronies whose actions have brought such devastation to Iraq. Hitler and his gang were tried as war criminals - where does that leave Bush and Blair, who have brought such havoc to the Middle East with their illegal war?
