STEPS could be taken to prevent boy racers from speeding around a Droitwich car park at night.

Spa town councillors have asked Wychavon District Council to consider the possibility of erecting a fence or barrier at the Lido car park before someone is seriously hurt.

It is hoped that such a measure will prevent youths gathering on the Worcester Road car park and using the area to drive at high speeds after dark.

Droitwich Spa's deputy mayor Councillor John Cook (Lab-Droitwich West) said: "We have to make a stand on this issue. It is a car park and not there to be used by boy racers. This is the only way to safeguard the area at night." He fears that someone could be seriously hurt and says the issue is going to be raised with Wychavon in the hope that something can be done as soon as possible.

"It is not ideal that we would have to do this, but it is the only alternative for the town. This is a problem that has got a lot worse recently and the police are constantly being called to the car park because of the issue.

"It is dangerous for the youths and other people who also use the car park and it also disturbs the people living near to the area in question.

"Such a measure would also help to stop youngsters gathering to drink alcohol and to take drugs where they cannot be seen," he added.

Sgt Mark Smith, of Droitwich Spa police, said: "We are constantly seeking to improve our policing operations in the town, including those areas around the Lido.

"In this we work closely with the town council and Wychavon and so we would welcome any initiatives by them, such as the use of suitable and effective barriers, which help us to support those with proper and legitimate reasons for using the park and Lido and which help us tackle unacceptable anti-social behaviour, especially late at night or in the early hours of the morning."

But concerns have been raised about the future of Droitwich Spa's bowling green if such a measure was taken because it would prevent the club from holding small evening functions which provide valuable income.

However, it is hoped that if a barrier or fence was put on the site, a key would be given to the club.
