HOUSEHOLDERS who want to do their bit for the environment are being offered financial help.

People in Herefordshire and Worcestershire can claim up to £80 towards the cost of kitting out their kitchens with a food waste disposal system. Food waste disposers work by grinding food and scraps, such as vegetable peelings, fruit skins, food leftovers, teabags, crusts and chicken bones, down into fine particles, small enough to be flushed away through normal waste pipes. County councillor Peter Pinfield is among the latest people to have one of the under-the-sink systems installed in his home through the council's Sink Your Waste offer.

Coun Pinfield said: "Food waste disposers are a great way to deal with messy and smelly waste. They also allow households, no matter how small or large they are, to get rid of their kitchen waste quickly and hygienically without sending it to landfill. My disposer also enables me to be tackle waste such as scraps and cooked food leftovers that are not suitable to put in one of my compost bins."The Sink Your Waste offer is being run as part of the county council's Mission Impossible campaign, which aims to encourage more people to take part in kerbside recycling and dispose of more waste at home.
