WORK to restore one of Bromsgrove's most impressive landmarks was set to start this week.

The impressive flight of steps, leading from St John Street to the parish church above, have been closed for 18 months after they were found to be unsafe.

After months of negotiations involving the church authorities, county and district councils and other organisations, the work was scheduled to start on Monday at a cost of £47,000. The county council is footing the bill.

The contractors are Chester Stone Ltd, a company which has carried out similar work in Cheshire. The lighting system on the steps will also be upgraded at the same time.

It is expected the work will last between eight and ten weeks.

Dr George Lord (Con-Alvechurch) the leader of the county council, who lives in Belle Vue Close, Marlbrook, said: "I am personally delighted that this renovation work is finally going ahead."

Two others who have worked tirelessly to get the job started are the two district councillors for the town centre St John's ward - Rita Dent and Dennis Norton.

Cllr Dent said: "Both of us are absolutely delighted the county council has agreed to fund the refurbishment of the steps.

"After the extensive renovation work on the parish church, the steps will add the finishing touch to what is a magnificent landmark and place of worship."
