A FIRE which ripped through tonnes of straw in a Vale village on Tuesday evening is being treated as arson, police revealed this week.

Detectives have issued an appeal for information about a car seen parked in the field in Buckle Street, where the straw was kept, shortly before the fire broke out.

The alarm was raised just after 8.40pm and the blaze involved a large stack of baled straw, estimated to be 200ft in length and believed to be worth thousands of pounds.

As the stack was near the road, smoke from the fire resulted in it being closed for some time.

Fire officers who also attended the incident estimated the fire might burn for up to two days.

The car was described as a grey Volvo V70 saloon, with a registration number beginning with K and including the figure 3. Police were able to gather some information from witnesses. Anyone who saw a vehicle matching this description are urged to call 08457 444 888.
