SEVERN Trent is investing £2 million to provide Redditch residents with a more reliable water supply.

Work to replace 16,260 metres of old water mains with new polyethylene pipes has begun in efforts to provide a better service. It is set to be completed by next July.

Project manager Richard Jemmett said: "Workers will be replacing more than 50 per cent of the pipework with innovative no-dig technology which is less disruptive in terms of reduced excavation activities and environmental impact.

"It means instead of digging long trenches in pavements and roads, old pipes will be cracked open and replacements dragged into place without the need for much digging.''

The improvements will be carried out in the Lodge Park and Lakeside areas.

"This is part of our bid to drive down leakage and improve the taste and appearance of tap water," said Mr Jemmett.

"Since 1995, we've reduced leakage by a third and spend more than £1 million per day improving water and waste services. This scheme will result in a more reliable service for customers."
