THE latest landmark in Stourport has been opened as part of the historic canal basins regeneration work aiming to breathe new life into the town.

Mayor, Mike Partridge, carried out the official unveiling ceremony for the new bridge over the reclaimed Lichfield Basin, due to be filled next month - 200 years after its original construction.

Woodford Group, which bought the land in 2005 and secured planning permission for 144 properties, designed and built the link to hand it over to British Waterways, which is currently carrying out a separate £3.2 million project in the area.

Stephen Daubney, Woodford Group's chief executive, said: "We worked closely with British Waterways, local authorities, businesses and residents to ensure our plans and restoration works were not only attractive and sustainable but also historically accurate.

"I am proud that we've had the rare opportunity to regenerate such a significant and historic area," he added.

Councillor Anne Hingley, Wyre Forest District Council's cabinet member for planning, health and environment, said: "The canal basins are providing a real catalyst for change and regeneration in Stourport.

"The new developments will provide a huge boost to the local economy and ensure that the town remains one of the premier visitor locations in the West Midlands."
