THE temporary interruption to our food imports caused by the terrorist alert on the airways and affecting air freight, shows how vulnerable is our supply chain.
What other factors could cause even greater disruption and perhaps at very short notice?
A thriving home agriculture is the answer, capable of a quick response in time of need, prepared to increase production to meet the needs of the 60 million mouths on these islands.
Our dairy industry is particularly in need of support as we import a wide range of dairy products including liquid milk, butter, cheese etc, much of which could be home produced.
Dairy herds take years to build up and good dairy stockmanship and expertise is required to get the best out of them.
The dairy industry urgently needs protecting and encouraging, now, before the situation, already critical, deteriorates further.
