I WAS saddened to read George Cowley's letter, headed Thank God I'm here, regarding my letter of the previous week, in which I criticised the government for the tax burden, including inheritance tax, and the way they are wasting this, to undeserved causes.

Ministers have said that three million people are on incapacity benefit who shouldn't be and this figure is hiding the true unemployment figures. Many have been found, who are on incapacity benefit with bad backs, playing on the golf courses and moonlighting.

George Cowley perhaps took things out of context and in no way would I criticise people who are helped by the government who can't help themselves and I would apologise wholeheartedly for giving him the impression that I did. Perhaps if he read my letter again, he would see that I did not intend for genuinely ill people to be insulted. Of course not! I voted for the Welfare State in 1948. I don't know whether I would today.
