Although there is much debate about the inclusion or exclusion of squash courts at the proposed new leisure centre in Evesham, there should be more consideration about the proposed location.

Currently the traffic situation in Evesham is chronic, particularly early mornings and afternoons, when queuing from Greenhill to get through town, and down Cheltenham road for various reasons, is a real problem.

The proposed siting of the new leisure centre will make the situation considerably worse, as all vehicles going to the centre will either have to come through town or across the bridge at the bottom of Cheltenham Road. Access to the current centre has an easy route in from the bypass.

There are two traffic safety cameras in Evesham, and they are on the Cheltenham road and in Hampton, one would assume they are there for safety reasons, and anything adding to the traffic problems around the traffic lights on Waterside must add to the hazards present.

The situation isn't made any easier when the only other bridge, at the bottom of Port Street, is virtually a one-way affair, forcing traffic through the lights on the Cheltenham/Waterside junction. (Why can't this be changed?)

A new traffic roundabout has been constructed at Merstow Green, a location where there were very few traffic problems, and seemingly little else done to alleviate the traffic problem we have.

Squash courts or not, siting the proposed new leisure centre would appear to add significant traffic problems to an already unsatisfactory situation in Evesham.
