A FRIENDLY was the only game for Broadway last weekend when the club's men travelled to Suffolk Square in Cheltenham.

The visitors were the winners by ten shots as Steve Aldren and Colin Cooper posted handsome victories.

Peter Springell nearly pulled off the great escape when he picked up seven on the penultimate end to bring himself to within three shots of his opponent.

He then held the three shots necessary for the draw only for Suffolk Square to draw the shot with their last wood! Steve Aldren's rink of Peter Bowes, Fred Green and Ernie Shorthouse hit a purple patch after six ends when they scored 13 shots without reply to establish a commanding lead and they went on to win by 28-15.

Colin Cooper was always in control against Mike Freeberry but, leading 24-7, he dropped two fives on the 19th and 20th ends so only won 25-17.

Mick Aubrey conceded 12 shots without reply midway through the game to give himself an uphill task to win and went down 22-15.

South Warwickshire Association

THE English Fire Service Association were the visitors to Stratford where they comfortably extinguished the challenge of their hosts!

The scores were level at 24-24 after five ends but the South Warwickshire side then started to struggle and trailed 61-40 after ten ends before hitting back to be 84-68 adrift after 15.

However, the revival ended there as the Fire Service ran out 127-93 victors.

The SWBA's highest winning rink comprised Alan Milbourne, Keith Ogilvie, Ron Boalch and skip Mike Blakemore.

Harvey Brereton was the other successful skip while Ken Dixon's rink earned a draw.
