DRIVERS in Kidderminster are in for more misery with the announcement roadworks on Comberton Hill, due to finish this week, will continue for nearly two more months.

Severn Trent Water confirmed the work was taking longer than expected due to the composition of the road surface and unforeseen problems with the number of other underground utility pipes not originally specified on the plans.

The blockade, preventing motorists from travelling up the hill, will be removed but temporary traffic lights will be put in place for six or seven weeks.

The news came as a blow to shop owners who claimed the roadworks had affected trade.

Steve Mouskos, owner of Captain Cods fish and chip shop, said: "It's affected us very badly and although we do have loyal customers, if they can't gain easy access to the shop they will go elsewhere.

"Our takings have been down 33 per cent since the work started so we will definitely be claiming compensation. We will have to see what the next few weeks bring but, hopefully, it will be better than the road being closed completely."

Deputy manager of One Stop, Rob Bellison, said: "We're disappointed to hear that the disruption is likely to continue.

"It's affected trade here and we, like many other businesses in the area, will be claiming for compensation as we rely quite heavily on passing trade."

The ongoing £1 million scheme, which began in June at various locations in Kidderminster, followed a 24-inch pipe burst at the junction of Spennells Valley Road and Comberton Road.

A Severn Trent Water spokesman said businesses affected by the works would certainly be considered for any loss of earnings but each individual case would be considered on its merits. Those affected are being asked to contact Severn Trent Water for further details on compensation claims.
