CHADDESLEY Corbett opened their West Midlands Regional League Division Two campaign with an encouraging 2-0 away win at Gornal Athletic Reserves.

With manager Gary Moore on a two-week family holiday, the reigns were handed over to assistant Matt Newkins, who combined his duties with playing at left back.

After a sluggish opening to the game, Chaddesley soon asserted their superiority and took the lead just after the break.

The opening goal came when Jon Baker latched onto a long clearance from Mike Kimberley and steered the ball in from close range.

Craig Richards sealed the three points when he powered into the box and drilled home the second goal after a raid down the right.

Ravens' spokesman Ben Watkins said: "All-in-all, it was an very encouraging performance on a difficult surface against stubborn opposition.

"Let's hope this is the start of a fine season."

Chaddesley travel to Penkridge Town on Saturday (3pm kick off).
