THE annual Brian Shayler cribbage competition, which is sponsored by the Royal Mail Sports Foundation, raised £430 for the Meningitis Trust.
The singles event, held at the Cross Keys, had 30 Post Office entries from Bristol, Cardiff, Malvern, Oxford, Reading and Salisbury and also nine entries from the Cross Keys, who were friends of the late Brian Shayler.
After nine hours of cribbage the results were as follows: Winner Anthony Lampitt (Cross Keys); runner-up Jonathan Wilmshurst (Cross Keys); semi-finalists Kevin Nolan (Malvern) and Trevor Lewis (Oxford); quarter-finalists Craig Draper (Cardiff), Geoff Arundel (Oxford), John Castle (Oxford) & Neville Dodson (Oxford).
The earlier held team event resulted in:
1 Anchor. M Smith, Trevor Smith, Richard Smith and H Smith. 2 Ann's Artists (Cross Keys). Ann Holden, Des Stimson, Jon Waugh, Dave Harding, Colin Panting. 3 Nomads (Town Club). Bryan Webster, Roy Wilson, John Vines, Dave Eagle and Trevor Eagle. 4 Bob & Bob (Cross Keys). Kevin Nolan, Malcolm Mason, Andy Kirkwood, Bob Noble and Bob Smith.
Best singles average award in the team event was won by M Smith from the Anchor.
The team competition raised £211 and the singles competition raised £219.
Special thanks to everyone who took part, the Royal Mail Sports Foundation for supplying all the trophies for both competitions. Mrs Shayler and Reg Reynolds for presenting the prizes. Ann, Reg and Becky at the Cross Keys for all their hospitality, especially the food which was gratefully received.
