PEOPLE living on Hornyold Road, Malvern, have been forced to put up their own road signs urging drivers to slow down.

They are fed up with drivers speeding along their road and have been trying to get authorities to take some action for more than a year.

In desperation, they have now attached six signs to lampposts on the road, thanking drivers for staying within the 30mph limit.

Peter and Sonia Hartwell were moved to action after their cat Jessica was killed a year ago. A few weeks later, a neighbour's cat was also run down.

They got up a petition, which attracted dozens of signatures. A survey carried out by the Highways Partnership showed about 30 per cent of vehicles broke the speed limit. The highest speed recorded was 56mph.

"The only feedback we have received so far is that someone will need to be killed or seriously injured before those responsible will take effective action," said Mr Hartwell.

His wife said: "We just want something like a chicane to slow them down or even a '30' painted in the road to remind them there is a speed limit.

"But it has to be a co-ordinated, strategic response," said Mr Hartwell.

"Otherwise it will just push the problem somewhere else."

Neighbour Cleland Newton said: "We've lived here 20 years and it's definitely getting worse as time goes by."

Monika Gordon said: "We've lost three cats in this road over the last eight years. There are families up and down the road who have lost cats."

Another neighbour Kevin Warren said: "I've got young children and I don't feel it's safe letting them out the front."

A spokesman for the county highways department said: "We are working up some options and we will be presenting them to the residents in due course."
