NIGHTCLUBS conjure up images of thumping, loud music, breezy and brash young people - and those who are perhaps not quite so young - partying away until the early hours without a care in the world.

The high-energy inhabitants of such places might appear to be light years away from their fellow citizens at the other end of the scale, those of us whose tail feather-shaking days are well and truly over.

Without a doubt, anyone might be forgiven if they thought that ne'er the generational twain could possibly meet. But there again, life is full of pleasant surprises, and today we report on an example of selflessness, good citizenship and plain old human kindness that is calculated to warm the cockles of even the stoniest heart.

So step forward music impresarios Steve Cass and Steve High, two men who have proved without any shadow of doubt that hedonism can have a heart. For thanks to them, a new seating area has been built for the residents of Severn House, a sheltered accommodation complex in St John's, Worcester. The development includes three benches and a bird table on the grassed area next to the tower block.

Worcester, like all other communities, sometimes encounters problems when it comes to co-existence. The needs and tastes of different age groups so often throw up problems that are occasionally solved by impersonal agencies. But here we have a marvellous example of bridges being built between the generations, thanks to a couple of men who could still think clearly above the house music hubbub.
