SIR - Like most people, I was appalled to read (August 23 that "nine out of 10 garages are adjusting and charging for car wheel alignment, when not necessary".

Two points come to mind. Wheel alignment is a delicate business and there are often small discrepancies in the many different machines used. Even after re-setting, moving the car just a short distance can then give another incorrect reading.

However, if the Trading Standards Officers know what they are about, they will have allowed for this discrepancy in their report. In that event, the comment that garages "can expect a severe warning - or even prosecution" is a totally inadequate response. They should throw the book at all the garages concerned.

Similarly, it is the duty of, and we pay for, the Trading Standards to protect public interest and this they have spectacularly failed to do.
