CATTLE left starving to death at an Alvechurch farm have been moved by the RSPCA.

A spokesman told the Advertiser the cows that sparked national outrage at Emmadale Farm in Rowney Green Lane, had now been moved to an undisclosed location.

"We can confirm that on veterinary advice we have moved the cattle to an undisclosed location where they can be properly managed and their welfare needs properly met," she said.

"We are continuing to see to the cattle's daily welfare needs and there is an ongoing investigation."

She said given the exceptional circumstances, DEFRA had released a movement licence with strict criteria so the cows could be moved.

Attention fell on the farm last month when it was discovered 90 cows had to be destroyed and another 30 were left starving to death when owners Lionel, David and Stephen Tongue were jailed for non-payment of fines relating to breaches of the Protection of Animals Act. A red-rape row caused difficulties over who could take control of the cattle and police finally seized the animals, passing control to the RSPCA.

Alvechurch Parish Council chairman John Puckering said: "I am pleased something is being done and the RSPCA has taken responsibility and is feeding them now."
