A WORCESTERSHIRE school is aiming to put the community at the heart of learning by launching a special project with the police.

In what is believed to be the first venture of its kind in the district, Stourport High School, in Minster Road, Stourport-on-Severn, has joined forces with West Mercia Police to launch a new Citizenship project.

PC Jon Harris will work from an office on the school site, in effect becoming the local `beat' police officer for the school community, leading meetings with students on site to discuss and vote on local priorities for action.

PC Harris is already a regular visitor, having supported two national projects, and is a governor of both the high school and the new secondary school, which will open in September 2007.

He has been holding weekly informal beat surgeries at school for the past two years and headteacher Liz Quinn said it was a natural progression to setting up the office once a suitable room became available.
