A WORCESTERSHIRE parliamentary candidate and a senior member of the Liberal Democrat party have visited a Worcester hospice.

Richard Burt, who is hoping to become Lib Dem MP for West Worcestershire, took a closer look at the work being done by St Richard’s, alongside the party’s climate change spokesman Simon Hughes.

Mr Hughes, who has been an MP for North Southwark and Bermondsey since 1983, said: “Hospices are very popular in their communities. We need to find a way of making it easier for them get more money through donations.

“We also want to make it easier for people to make donations by allowing them to set up free and easy access accounts which will allow them to make donations directly and make sure the charity gets as much money as possible.” Mr Burt said the recent TV election debate has galvanized the Liberal Democrats’ campaign.

He said: “The support for us over the last six months has been incredibly strong on the doorstep but Nick Clegg blew the lid off British politics at the debate last Thursday.

“We were in Tenbury Wells on Saturday and there was an electric atmosphere.

“People were coming up and taking posters from us saying how impressed they were with his performance.

“People have been enthused by the prospect of real change and it has made the whole election incredibly exciting.

“But I am keeping my feet firmly on the floor.”
