MUCH has been said about last week’s first live televised leaders’ debate – not least the remarkable surge in support for the Liberal Democrats it provoked.

Tomorrow Gordon Brown and David Cameron will attempt to make up lost ground on Nick Clegg.

But tonight the voters of Worcester get the chance to see how the three main party candidates cope in a similar situation.

Our Election Debate takes place at Worcestershire CCC’s New Road ground tonight before an audience of 100 local people.

They will be able to quiz Labour’s Mike Foster, Tory Robin Walker and Liberal Democrat Jackie Alderson on the issues of the day and hear from each of them why they think they should be the city’s next MP.

There are, of course, six other candidates for the Worcester seat. And Jack Bennett (UKIP), Andrew Christian-Brookes (Independent), Spencer Kirby (BNP), Peter Nielsen (Independent), Andrew Robinson (Pirate) and Louis Stephen (Green) will all get the chance to answer the same questions posed at tonight’s debate. The Worcester News in print and online next Monday will publish their answers.

Tonight’s debate will be covered live on our website here with full reports in tomorrow’s Worcester News. A video of the entire debate will also be posted on our website after the debate has ended.

It will be interesting to see how our local candidates respond to direct questioning from the electorate. And it will be interesting to see if, just as in the national debates, the performance of one candidate can make all the difference.
