A TOWN’S folk festival has been a sell-out success as it celebrated its 21st year.

The Upton-upon-Severn Riverside Folk Festival finishes later today having had one of its best years ever.

Crowds have been delighted and entertained by the mix of music, dancing and entertainment on offer at the popular event.

Geoff Johnson, secretary of the Upton Folk Dance and Song Society, said: “It is our 21st anniversary and we have put a lot of effort into making it great. It’s been a very good weekend for Upton. All the pubs are packed and people are just getting going.”

About 3,000 people have got involved in the four-day event and taken part in a wide range of activities – everything from making spoons to singing sea shanties.

Mr Johnson, who has been involved in the society for 10 years, said: “We’ve sold out of tickets for the weekend and it’s not every year that we do that. We’ve got a mixture of things on this year.

“The procession is usually incredibly popular – we’ve had more Morris dancers than ever before taking part, 45 teams in total – but we have also had two or three sell-out concerts.”

But there will be no rest for the members of the Upton Folk Society once this year’s festival is over.

“We are already planning the next one,” said Mr Johnson.
