THIS is the first glimpse of the environmentally-friendly superstore which could soon be built in a Worcestershire town.

People in Tenbury Wells are being given the chance to review the plans for a timber-framed and glass store, proposed to be built on the town’s former cattle market.

Tesco has submitted plans to build the 15,000 sq ft store, selling food, books, CDs and DVDs, and provide 94 car parking spaces.

However, the store’s original application was knocked back by Malvern Hills District Council last week because it was missing important reports, including a flood risk assessment and ecological survey.

Councillor David Hughes said: “Once we have got that back we can validate the application.

“There will be an extensive consultation with members of the public by Tesco and the council and then it goes to the planning committee for a decision. We are very keen to make sure that whatever Tesco wants to do will enhance the town, not destroy it.”

Tesco says the store would create 180 jobs.

It will be bigger than Tesco Express or Metro stores, but will be at the smaller end of the chain’s portfolio of supermarkets. There are no plans for a petrol station on the site, which has been disused for more than 20 years.

Residents have until the end of today to view and discuss the proposals at a public exhibition at the Pump Rooms in the town.Representatives from Tesco were on hand to answer questions about the controversial plans.

Tony Fletcher, corporate affairs manager at Tesco, said: “This was an opportunity for members of the public, and the local community, to speak to members of our planning team and give their feedback.

“The comments we received from people at this exhibition will then be incorporated into the scheme where possible.”
