TRAFFIC in and around Worcester city centre is bad enough at the best of times.

A variety of council roadworks in the past couple of weeks have made the situation worse, though most of the work has taken place during the night.

Yesterday the city had the combination of good weather, a county championship cricket match and an evening race meeting.

So what did the county council do? Their workers spent most of the day remarking white lines on New Road directly outside the cricket club.

More than 1,000 attended the match – and the club had no notice of the work. The result, not helped by problems with traffic lights at the Sidbury end of London Road, was hold-ups of 30 minutes or more right across the city centre.

The council says the work was scheduled to avoid the evening races. If that is the case, then why could it not have been done through the night?
