CHURCHES in and around a Worcestershire town have been targeted by metal thieves who have stolen thousands of pounds worth of lead.

St Peter’s in Church Lane, Droitwich, was hit for the second time in just 10 days on Sunday.

It took the total value of metal stolen from the building’s roof to well over £20,000.

The latest raid comes during a spate of metal thefts at other churches in the areas surrounding Droitwich.

St Michael’s Church in Salwarpe was also targeted for a second time within a month.

Father Doug Chaplin, from the parish of Droitwich, said: “I think this shows people have got no respect for church buildings anymore. I have heard that churches in Hanbury and Claines have also been targeted, as well as St Peter’s and St Michael’s.

“People will need to keep an eye out for thefts and must feel free to call us and check if we have work going on, especially if they see someone suspicious.

“This has happened at St Peter’s for the second time, but has also happened at other churches in the area now.

“We want people to know that this is happening so they can be on the look out. It appears that the town’s churches have now become a target for this crime.”

A police spokesman said: “If anyone saw anything suspicious at these churches we would ask them to get in touch. The stolen metal will obviously be taken to scrap dealers so we would appeal for them to come forward if they notice anything suspicious.”
