A NEW driver was told that he will have his licence revoked after being caught driving at more than double the speed limit.

Aakash Rashid, aged 19, of Primrose Crescent, Worcester, was caught by police travelling at an average of 66mph on Spetchley and London Road, Worcester, where there is a speed limit of 30mph.

Rashid, who passed his test in August 2009, was followed by police in an unmarked police car at 12.22am on Sunday, March 7, who recorded his speed on a portable monitor.

When he was stopped by officers, Rashid told them that he was driving fast because he thought he was being followed.

Lisa Mayne, prosecuting, told Worcester magistrates that the unmarked police car had to travel at a similar speed to the defendant in order to detect his average speed.

Mrs Mayne also told the court that Rashid already had three penalty points on his licence.

Defending himself, Rashid, a student, said that his family relied on him as the main driver, especially to take his five-year-old sister, who is heavily asthmatic, to school and hospital.

But he was told by the magistrates that there was no excuse for his speed.

Chairman of the bench Gill Porter said: “You were driving much too fast. No matter what time of the night you were out there are still other people on the road, people crossing the road. At the speed you were travelling you could have killed someone.

“You don’t have a good record and you’ve only been driving since August.”

Rashid was fined £85 and ordered to pay a £15 victim surcharge.

He was given another six penalty points and was told that his licence would be revoked by the DVLA, meaning he will have to resit his test within two years.

He was also ordered to pay £85 in court costs.
