A WORCESTER school have achieved a memorable double on the cricket field.

Pupils at Warndon Primary School picked up trophies in the year five and six categories of ASDA’s Kwik cricket district tournament.

The younger team then went one better by winning the regional stage at Old Elizabethans CC yesterday.

The year six side also competed in the next round of the tournament, finishing sixth.

Dean Salisbury, one of the teachers in charge of the cricket at the school, was delighted with the pupils.

He said: “It was a great effort from the kids. At the start of the year, not many knew much at all about cricket and so we’ve had to really work hard at lunchtimes and after school. It’s been great fun.

“The boys and girls showed great determination and the team spirit was incredible, something that doesn’t come naturally to children of this age, so we’re really pleased.”

But it isn’t just the cricket teams who are doing well.

The school’s football side, who finished second in the Worcester City League, lost 1-0 in a close John Appleton Memorial Shield final to Perdiswell Primary but had already collected silverware after winning a tournament at King’s Hawford School.

Linda Morgan, who teaches the year six class, said: “Over the last few years, we’ve put a keen emphasis on sport.

“It is great to get the kids active but there are educational benefits as well as fitness benefits. The sporting success has had a really positive impact on the school as a whole.

“We’re really seeing it bear fruit now and it’s doing wonders for the self-esteem of everyone at the school. We’re looking forward to continuing this good run next year.”
