CONTROVERSIAL plans to build a supermarket in Tenbury have failed to gain the support of planning officers.

Tesco wanted to build a 15,000 sq ft store on the town’s former cattle market.

Although the environmentally-friendly store was planned to be a timber-framed and glass store, Malvern Hills District Council has refused the application.

Officers said the application for conservation area consent to demolish the Russell Baldwin & Bright building - which is currently on the site - meant the supermarket had to be refused.

In a statement planning officers said: “The 19th century building is considered to be too important because it frames views into the former Cattle Market site from both Teme Street and the bridge over the river.“ Tesco has subsequently withdrawn its planning application.

Nobody from Tesco was available to comment at the time of going to press.
