How will this £70m sports village work?

AN MP has once again “poured a dose of cold water” on plans for a £70 million sports village near Worcester.

Peter Luff, MP for Mid-Worcestershire, said his “jaw hit the floor” when he saw images of the proposed development at Hindlip on the front page of your Worcester News last week.

Sir Bert Millichip Sports want to build facilities including an Olympic swimming pool, indoor cricket centre and football academy at the 84-acre site.

The company also plans to build up to 2,000 homes as part of a larger scale development stretching from Fernhill Heath to Pershore Lane, which is in Mr Luff’s constituency.

Mr Luff has previously spoken out against the idea and has reiterated his concerns about the number of houses which will need to be built in order to fund the project.

He is also worried about traffic at junction six of the M5 and thinks the centre will be more for the sporting elite rather than the community.

The MP, who is also minister for defence procurement, said he doesn’t think the figures stack up and wants more information.

He said: “It’s okay putting the nice pretty pictures into the public domain but we need to see some sort of a business plan which answers all the questions.

“How many houses need to be built to fund the project? How long is it going to take? How much is it going to cost? And where is the money going to come from?

“I just don’t think it is affordable, it is such a huge development and I think it would need at least 2,500 homes to fund it.

“I’m not saying that it is not exciting or that it is a bad idea but I don’t think it will work.”

Peter Millichip, managing director of the company, said it is up to the planners at Wychavon District Council do decide on the viability of the business plans.

Mr Millichip said: “We have always understood and accepted that, as part of the planning process, the authorities will wish to be satisfied that the scheme is both deliverable and sustainable.

“The plans have been in gestation for four years and we have shared considerable information and business plans with the local authority.

“We are confident we will be able to satisfy them on both elements.

“Peter Luff is of course perfectly entitled to raise his concerns.

“We would be delighted that he should embrace what we are trying to achieve for the good people of Worcestershire.”

Formal plans for the sport site and proposed housing development will be submitted towards the end of the year.

How dramatic " jaw hit the floor" , Mr Luff stop being so negative, I believe from the responses I have heard from people so far that most are positive!

Yes i agree , lets see more on this proposed development, but bear in mind as a local MP he should be aspiring to see the area improve, on the face of it , it seems like a great asset for Worcestershire.

A new Arena for the University with an Olympic team training in the area.

Birmingham/Coventry crying out for Olympic Swimming training facilities. They can't get them, we have the opportunity!

Worcester Uni's growth in recent years has been great.

Surely he can see that Worcester is rapidly becoming more popular and more and more a place to live and work.

Go with the flow Mr Luff, embrace change and try having a positive outlook on this great area!

Bless you barry you beat me to it, totally agree the facts and figures need to be published. But what a fantastic opportunity to create a facility that would be fantastic for the local community in terms of employment and also leisure. Don’t be so dramatic peter luff, recognise the fact Worcester is growing fast and support it, because it creates wealth for everyone in the area. Lets stop with the constant negative nimby attitudes. You saying the company proposing this needs to supply more information, correct but you also say ‘I cant see it working’ what information do you base that on? it would be interesting to know or is it the usual nimby view point that anything new just wont work full stop.

I'm reserving judgment until more information comes out. The idea of a community sports facility sounds good, but at what price? 2000 houses is a lot for any village to absorb. To be honest I would imagine it's a big risk for the developer too.

Well done to Peter Luff for being realistic about this project.
By looking at each component it is clear the scheme cannot run without a considerable amount of public funding.
Highlighting just 2 off them shows this.
Why build a cricket centre when Worcestershire CCC can't afford to fund a profitable hotel developmenta 2nd & a 50 metre pool will cost at least £25 million pounds, every one in the UK runs at a financial loss & even Birmingham can not afford to subsidise one.
The project is just a vehicle by which a few individuals will make a lot of money from the taxpayer.

If that scheme goes ahead it would be like us Worcester folk giving the Northern Link and the M5 Junction to others to do with as they will.

The site location means that it would be an overspill for Birmingham and the Black Country. We would loose the Northern Link and the M5 junction with the congestion that it would create.

One for the tip I think.
