MOST reasonable people would agree that any measures – no matter how small – aimed at alleviating Worcester’s chronic traffic problems should be greeted with open arms.

The question of how to accommodate 21st century vehicle volumes with the stark reality of a city that still essentially revolves around its mediaeval core has been a vexed issue that has challenged planners and politicians for many years.

So if you can walk, cycle, take a bus rather than use your car, then every citizen should do their bit. Basically, every little bit helps.

With this in mind, your Worcester News must admit to being rather perplexed and also disappointed by Worcestershire County Council’s decision to charge Worcester Warriors for a park-and-ride facility run from County Hall on matchdays. The county council has offered continued use of its facilities until discussions are finished.

The club’s original agreement was drawn up 10 years ago and involved the county council and various other bodies. It was a matchday transport plan that, over the years, undoubtedly removed countless traffic movements from gridlocked roads.

We live in cash-strapped times and the county is undoubtedly keen to maximise all areas of potential revenue. This newspaper – never slow to criticise any perceived bad housekeeping – understands such considerations.

Nevertheless, when it comes to reducing congestion, we feel everyone should be singing from the same hymn sheet. Perhaps this is one idea that should be rapidly kicked into touch.

But if everyone is to sing from the same hymnsheet, won't all other users have to get the service free too? Not sure how the city's 'mediaeval core' sits with a service running between County Hall & Sixways?

As a commercial concern Worcester Warriors and/or its fans should pay for the park & ride.
Npower Pay & so do Worcester Acute Hospitals, although the latter seems to be largely ignored.
I can see no reason why I, as a council taxpayer, should subsidise any rugby fans parking.

I totally agree with the two posters above. The Park and Ride runs between County Hall and Sixways along the A4440 and therefore has no discernable impact whatsoever on the City's "medieval core."

Also why should the Council Tax payer subsidise transport too and from the Rugby Club? The Club make a lot of money from selling tickets and merchandise to their supporters. They should bear the cost of helping get these supporters to the stadium.

The park and ride has been a great success in easing the parking problems on match days at Sixways so it would be in order for the club to pay towards it. In a way they are going to have to if the County Council insist or things will revert to how they were pre-park and ride with people parking their cars anwhere and the police having to provide traffic management, at a cost. Although as I recall quite a few Special Constables would assist in this role. If there isn't provision made for parking then this will cause huge problems for the club I would imagine. I have found though that the car park at the small shopping centre near by the stadium gets packed with supporters dumping their cars there.
