SEVENTY years to the day and this perfect Worcester couple got married – and say they wouldn’t change a minute of the time they have spent together.
Julle and Charles Andrews are today celebrating their platinum wedding anniversary, along with their three children, 18 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mrs Andrews – whose father was a publisher at what was the Worcester News and Times, now the Worcester News – was just 15 when she first met Charles through a friend, but they didn’t start courting until she was 16.
However, soon after the war, they decided to get married as Mr Andrews was called up to fight. Mrs Andrews, aged 88 and Mr Andrews, 90, married at a church in Castle Street on the site which is now the police station.
She said: “It was a lovely day. We had a taxi to get to the reception, but we had to walk back home.
“We always hoped we would spend all our lives together. We are lucky to have each other.”
The happy couple, of Lyttleton Street, Barbourne, first lived in Lowesmoor, and had their first child David while the war was still raging, meaning he did not see Mr Andrews for about five years. “It was hard not seeing him and David was nearly five when he saw his father,” Mrs Andrews said.
Mrs Andrews worked as a cake decorator until she became a full-time mum and housewife. Once the war had finished, Mr Andrews was a postman in Worcester until he retired.
They both believe the secret to a long and happy marriage is to never go to bed on a bad word.
“We have had our ups and downs and had our disagreements, but we have always sorted them out and helped each other. We have never gone to bed not speaking to each other.
“We are looking forward to seeing all our family to celebrate,” she said.
Son David said: “We are so proud of them and can’t wait to celebrate the big day.”
Mrs Andrews said: “We are very happy. I wouldn’t change a minute.”
