THE sound of cannons rang out across the countryside when a historical manor came under siege.
People visiting Lower Brockhampton, near Bromyard, were transported back six centuries when the National Trust property was taken over by the Sir John Savile Household, a 15th century re-enactment group, who set up an authentic medieval camp site in the grounds.
Children learned about military and civilian life, tried archery, dressed up and took part in a siege.
Hilary Smith, the estate’s property administrator, said: “There was a great atmosphere and lots of people. We have events throughout the year, but the medieval ones are particularly appropriate because the house was built then.
“The group seem to have done a bit of research into the house’s history because they even knew the name of the lady of the manor.”
