Keeping Emily's legacy alive through fun day

AN action-packed day of fun has been organised by the family of a Worcestershire woman who drowned in New Zealand.

Two years after the death of Emily Jordan, who drowned while riverboarding, her parents Sarah and Chris, sister Lucy and brother Alex are holding a day to remember her, and also raise money for the foundation set up in her name.

The second It’s A Knockout event will be held on Sunday at RGS The Grange School sports fields, and already they have 16 teams of 12 people taking part in a host of activities, including quizzes and games, a mini-marathon and human size football competition.

There will also be a bar, barbecue, cake stall and merchandise on sale to raise money for the charity which helps adults with learning difficulties, a cause which was very close to Emily’s heart. Mr Jordan, of Trimpley, near Bewdley, said they hoped to raise more than £10,000 on the day.

“At the 2008 launch event we raised more than £12,000 for the foundation over the year and we want to beat that amount. We are hoping for some past teams to come back for their revenge and to try to get their hands on the coveted It’s A Knockout trophy but also some new teams that feel they are up for the challenge,” he said.

The Emily Jordan Foundation was set up by her family following her death in 2008.

They hope it will be a lasting legacy to the 21-year-old who was a pupil at the Alice Ottley School in Worcester (now RGS Worcester) before graduating from Swansea University with a first-class law degree.

The foundation will shortly be starting a course with Kidderminster College called the Route to Work Diploma to help those individuals to get out into the workplace.

Mr Jordan said: “A prime focus of all that we do is to build the self-esteem of them – if you have been told all of your life you cannot do anything, you can start to believe it.”
