A BOAT has entered a Worcestershire canal for the first time in 80 years.
The symbolic gesture marked the opening of the 250-year-old Barge Canal in Droitwich – part of a £12 million project to restore the Barge and Junction Canals which will create a green waterway corridor around the area.
There is now just the short link of the Junction Canal to complete, which will be finished in 2011.
Jason Leach, British Waterways senior regeneration manager, said: “We are delighted to be welcoming boats back into Droitwich in time to participate in the Salt Day celebrations in the town on Saturday.
“At the event we will be launching the Mid-Worcestershire ring’s audio trail and providing information on the routes.
“It’s especially rewarding to see all the diverse efforts of groups and individuals coming to fruition after decades of planning and spade work.”
