Speeding motorists making life hell for villagers

PETRIFIED residents of a village just outside Worcester are pleading for road safety measures to be implemented on a busy rural road before someone is killed.

Householders living on a 30mph section of Crown East Lane, Lower Broadheath, say problems with speeding traffic have been gradually getting worse – but nothing has been done about it despite repeated requests.

Small 30mph disc signs have become obscured by overgrown bushes and residents say it is only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured or killed outside their homes because, they claim, vehicles regularly reach speeds up to 70mph.

Villager Mandy Hopkins said: “I have been here 47 years and it has just got worse and worse. My sister-in-law came up recently and got spun around by one vehicle. It’s diabolical. We are not safe. It’s a death trap.”

Neighbour Pete Spencer said he had witnessed several near misses and likened the road to a motorway. “It’s just crazy,” he said. “I have got two little toddlers and it scares the hell out of me.”

Sarah Littlewood, who has two children aged four months and two-and-a-half years, said she has been spat at by a driver while trying to get out of her driveway. “It’s scary,” she said.

Simon Middleweek, a former policeman, said the speeding vehicles create so much noise and vibration that they set car alarms off.

“It’s like a raceway,” he said. “It is a real danger. It’s making our lives a misery.”

A Worcestershire County Council spokesman urged residents to contact their local county councillor with their concerns and requests for traffic control and maintenance measures.

“In addition, the county council operates 12 portable electronic road signs – two per district – which are rotated between different locations,” she said. “Any resident who feels one of these signs would benefit their area should again contact their local councillor who will pass on their request for consideration.”

Mr Middleweek said over the last six years he has raised the issue with the parish council, West Mercia Police, West Mercia Safer Roads Partnership, West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin and county councillor Alwyn Davies but said nothing has been done.

Katy Jenkins, communications manager at West Mercia Safer Roads Partnership, said sites used to depend on speed and collision data but added that has now changed and also takes into consideration people’s quality of life.

She urged as many residents as possible to contact the partnership so a case – as part of the community concern scheme set up 12 months ago – could be put forward for road safety measures to be introduced on that section of road in the near future.

ha , it is probably biggles and the other advanced drivers showing off their advanced skills and proving that speed is ok, and this rd should be 60mph as no one has been killed.
All pedestrians, horse riders and cyclists should stay off the roads and leave it to the experts.
Come you petrol heads, start justifying it like you always do.

As you enter Lower Broadheath isn't there an electronic sign that displays... not the speed limit... but your ACTUAL speed?!
.
Nothing like giving the boy racers a target there?!
.
Yes driving can be fun (FUN?! How non-PC!) but so is living. I cycle and walk as much as I drive and would rather not be taken out by some numpty who is not responsible enough to slow right down through a village.

I thought Crown East Lane was Upper Broadheath - unless Upper Broadheath is a suburb of Lower Broadheath ? - always confuses me that one.
Anyway I have cycled and run there regularly and haven't noticed any mad speeding cars.
It wouldn't surprise me though if half the alleged speeders were residents themselves.
"Petrified" though - oh please!

I don't know the particular stretch of road in question but I have driven on plenty similar and 9 times out of 10 the people I see speeding through villages in between 60 zones are (believe it or not) the older generation and ladies who have not noticed the change in speed limit. I've lost count of the amount of times I've been stuck behind someone doing 45/50 in a 60, and then for that same car to accelerate away from me when I slow for a 30.

that's it Demigod, blame those who have no knowledge of how to use the modern fangled computer to reply on line and defend themselves.
I agree that some old folk are a bit rubbish at driving, I live in Malvern so I know all about it and women to be honest, well, they do spend most of their time behind the wheel either looking in the mirror to put make-up on or shouting at kids in the back on the way to school.
Oh yeah, texting their mates at the same time.
I hope my missus doesn't read this post :)

Well if the 30mph repeaters have been obscured then the signage doesn't comply and therefore the limit is unforceable so the road reverts back to NSL.
Secondly once again another load of Nimbys moaning with no evidence to back it up - Where's the speed survey data to prove all these people are driving at 70mph? or to prove the actual percentage or people exceeding the limit?

I've never driven down that road (as far as I know), so not me big windup !
.
I'd love to see some real data of actual speeds, I'd hazard a guess nothing gets anywhere near 70 mph, but as others have said, if the signage isn't correct, it's a 60 by default without lighting.
.
I will always take the motorists side, because people just keep whinging about cars, it's so pc these days
.
Of course the scamerati will be interested, they are trying not to join the dole queue !

In another Worcs village, a few years ago, villagers complained of speeding motorists doing 60mph in a 30 zone. They were ignored as no one speeds like that in a thirty.
Two fatalities later...
They monitored the AVERGAGE speed - 50mph!

I hope the problem in LB get resolved asap.

We have the long lartin staff shooting past our house at very fast speeds - at least 60 in a 30 zone - so far fatalities have been pets, sad in its own right, but why do we have to wait until its humans? everyone knows who speeds and that our lane is the prison rat run but nothing gets done about it. we know they are prison staff because they are in their uniform and whenever a speed trap is set up, the prison is given the heads up and the staff drive slowly.

erm maybe cut back the bushes so drivers can read the signs - If I was petrified I would be pretty motivated to do this!

Could always put up a static speed camera! I have a friend who campaigned for similar due to speeding motorbikes. They are now kept awake night and day by the bikes going down through the gears and braking followed by rapid and loud acceleration when they have passed it.

Careful what you wish for........

Petrified:verb (used with object)
1.
to convert into stone or a stony substance.
2.
to benumb or paralyze with astonishment, horror, or other strong emotion: I was petrified with fear.
3.
to make rigid or inert; harden; deaden: The tragedy in his life petrified his emotions.

If they are petrified they'd be too scared to cut back the bushes....

I think traffic calming measures like speed humps in conjunction with narrowing the road with a barrier & give way sign so only cars can only go one direction at a time (like the ones on Windermere Drive in Worcester) would help. This would be suitable for other areas with problems too. It works well. I think the lower end of Woodgreen Drive, Hastings Drive, Mill Wood Drive, Plantation Drive would be good candidates for this.

No tried and tested, we don't want anymore anti car measures thankyou all the same.
.
Strange how percieved risk can muddle your brain isn't it ?
.
What you suggest increases congestion, increases pollution, including noise pollution to those who live near the restrictions you suggest, and damages cars
