A teenage soldier was killed when the vehicle he was travelling in was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade in Afghanistan, an inquest heard today.

Private Rob Laws, of the 2nd Battalion The Mercian Regiment, died when the RPG penetrated his Spartan vehicle during Operation Panchai Palang - known as Panther's Claw.

Shortly after the 18-year-old was rescued by helicopter, Lance Corporal David Dennis, 29, of The Light Dragoons, was killed by an improvised explosive device (IED) triggered in an area close to the evacuation point.

They were both taking part in the campaign against insurgents in the north of Lashkar Gah when they died.

Both soldiers had suffered "non survivable injuries" caused by separate explosions on July 4 last year.

Wiltshire and Swindon Coroner David Ridley recorded verdicts of unlawful killing while on active service in Afghanistan for both soldiers.
