TWO determined families from Pershore are leading by example through their efforts to provide the best possible life for their disadvantaged children.

Parents Wayne and Kerry Collins have joined forces with Gaynor and Ron Amphlett, grandparents to their son, four-year-old Harvey Collins, who contracted muscular dystrophy last year, to form a fund-raising group.

The condition, which was described as “like a death sentence” for the family by Ron, causes progressive weakness in the muscles resulting in the inability to walk independently, and damaging the heart over time.

Gaynor said the family have vowed to do all they can to help Harvey’s cause and are planning a number of charitable events this year to raise money for research into beating the disease.

“Even prior to the formation of the group last week, as a family we have raised about £2,500 between us through half-marathons, two auctions and a book fair,” said Gaynor, a Pershore town councillor.

“We hope to plan ahead for the next 12 months arranging events in advance. Ideas at the moment are for a race night, a Christmas quiz and possibly an afternoon tea dance.

“Kerry is planning a parachute jump in her 30th year next year, while Wayne will be arranging golf events.”

Meanwhile, a charity quiz night has been organised for Saturday, September 25, at Pershore Naval Social Club in aid of Jonty Smith, aged four, who suffers from cerebral palsy, left hemiplegia and epilepsy.

Despite his difficulties, Jonty has just started primary school thanks to the support of his family and the help of a full-time carer, but he really needs a powered wheelchair so he can keep up with his friends.

His family are confident this vital piece of equipment will make a huge difference to Jonty’s life and have already raised about £1,000 through their own fund-raising efforts, but hope to find about £7,000 in total.

The quiz, which has been organised by friend Anita Bacon, starts at 7.30pm, and costs £2.50 per person.
