Awards joy after county blooms

COMMUNITITES across Worcestershire have been celebrating success in this year’s Heart of England in Bloom campaign.

In Worcestershire Malvern gained gold in the large town/small city category, Pershore won gold in the small town category and Upton-upon-Severn achieved gold in the large village category.

Winners of the competition – the regional element of the Britain in Bloom campaign organised by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) – were announced yesterday.

Judges were not only looking for horticultural achievement, but also responsibility for the environment and a display of community participation.

Certificates of Merit were given to: l Barbara Hartley – Upton in Bloom l Holly Mount Church – Malvern in Bloom lVal Wood – Pershore in Bloom Val Wood, secretary of Pershore in Bloom, said: “This is the second year on the trot that we have won gold and it wouldn’t be possible without the help of all the local organisations and authorities in the town.

“Everybody was thrilled with the award. It’s so nice to be recognised. The town does look beautiful this year and hopefully we can carry it on next year.”

Malvern Town Council representatives chairman Councillor Paul Tuthill, town clerk Richard Chapman and Coun John Jordan said they were all absolutely delighted with the result.

Upton in Bloom was also awarded the Heart of England in Bloom Biodiversity Award, sponsored by the Woodland Trust.

The other winner in Worcestershire was Redditch which was awarded a silver gilt in the large town/small city class.

In Herefordshire, Ledbury and Leominster won gold awards in the town category, Bromyard won gold in the small town category, Eardisland and Tarrington both won gold in the small village section and Dilwyn achieved silver-gilt and Pembridge silver in the village category.
