A DJ from Worcester who took to the turntables while recovering from a near-fatal accident at work has made it through to the final stages of a global competition.

Tim Foster, aged 34, was left with a fractured skull and suffered post-traumatic stress disorder after a 70kg gas canister fell off a roof onto his head while he was working as an air conditioning engineer.

After reading a DJ magazine he sold his house, learned how to mix, bought a sound system and started out as a DJ at discos, weddings and parties.

He won a regional final held at Sin bar in Worcester earlier this year and will now battle it out to be crowned the King of DJs in the Movida Corona DJ competition in Birmingham on Saturday.

Mr Foster, who uses the name Phatboy Tim, was injured while working in Stratford in August 2007.

He said: “The accident happened three years ago. I just woke up in hospital not knowing what had happened.

“I’d fractured my skull and was later diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.

“I was in a bad place. I didn’t get out of bed for a month. But then I read about a change of career in a DJ magazine and I thought, ‘Let’s go for it’.

“DJ-ing has saved my life really, it’s really helped me with my problems and I’m back working again. I really do not know what I would have done without it. It’s changed my life.”

Mr Foster, of Foregate Street, will perform at the Air nightclub in Birmingham to get through to the England final at the world-famous Ministry of Sound nightclub in London in October.

DJ Wally Lopez will be among those on the judging panel for the England final and the winner will go on to represent the country in the grand finale in Berlin for the ultimate prize.
