A MOTORCYCLIST who came off his bike after a car braked suddenly in front of him is appealing for witnesses to help track down the driver.

Tom Wells, of Victoria Avenue, off London Road, Worcester, said his thumb has been “smashed into tiny pieces” and may have to be removed completely.

The 20-year-old was riding his 125cc motorbike along Spetchley Road, between Nunnery Wood High School and Worcester Sixth Form College, when the car in front of him, a white hatchback, braked suddenly.

Mr Wells said: “I had to stop very sharply which caused my front wheel to lock completely, the bike grounded and I came off.

“The driver and a girl got out to ask if I was okay and at the time I thought I was.

“The driver then got straight back in the car and left without leaving any details. I was in a bit of shock so didn’t get the chance to take a note of the registration. Even if I said I was okay he still should have stuck around to give me his details”

Mr Wells initially thought he had dislocated his thumb but was told by staff at Worcestershire Royal Hosp-ital the bone had been smashed into tiny pieces.

He had an operation a couple of days later when surgeons used wiring to try to keep the thumb together but they now fear it may have to be removed completely.

Mr Wells has reported the matter to the police and is appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident – on Wednesday, September 15, at 10.15am – or the driver himself, to come forward.

He said the injury could jeopordise his job as a fitness instructor at the Whitehouse Hotel in Foregate Street, Worcester, and could affect his hobbies, which include playing the guitar and piano.

“If even an accident isn’t your fault you should still stop and give details – that is what people have insurance for,” Mr Wells said.

Anyone who saw the incident, or the driver of the car, is urged to contact police on 0300 3333000 quoting 635/S/150910.
