A CITY nightspot will remain shut for the foreseeable future, says its owner.

Graham Lock is the man at the helm of Bossa Nova in New Street, Worcester, which has been closed for several weeks.

The nightclub, which he took over in May last year, was completely refurbished under his tenure and earlier this year, renovation plans to extend and add a rooftop terrace restaurant bar were passed by city councillors.

However, work has stalled and Mr Lock said: “The club will remain closed for the foreseeable future. I’ve got some thinking to do. Nothing has been decided.”

Conditional planning approval was given in April to make the sweeping changes, including extending the club’s frontage to take in the former Hatt Kitchens showroom next door and the old site of the Worcester Antiques Centre in Reindeer Court.

The plans turned the nightclub into a wine bar/restaurant and jazz/ dance club with several bars over four floors.

There were to be reworked entrances off New Street and Reindeer Court, with a wine bar and restaurant on the ground floor, jazz club on the first floor, private function rooms on the second floor and daytime coffee bar and evening restaurant on the roof terrace, complete with an open decked area.

However, the Bossa Nova buildings are in the New Street conservation area and subject to strict rules over what materials can be used to make sure the premises are in keeping with neighbouring properties.

Worcester City Council planning chief Paul O’Connor said there had been no discussions since April with planning officers or the conservation officer.

He said: “As far as we know he has permission in an appropriate time period with nothing particularly onerous in additional planning conditions. It’s up to him to decide what he wants to do.”
