SHHHH! Quiet in the library – this is a silent disco!

Music lovers and book worms will share a dance floor when Worcester Library in Foregate Street hosts its first silent disco later this month.

Headphone parties – where revellers listen to music through headphones instead of a speaker system, are already popular at music festivals. Songs are broadcast via an FM transmitter with the signal being picked up by wireless headphones.

The Worcester party will take place from 6pm until 8pm on Wednesday, October 27. Entrance is free but visitors must become members.

Staff hope it will entice a younger crowd to the library, while Simon Beaumont is using the event to launch his silent disco business.

Mr Beaumont, of Drakes Broughton, near Pershore, founded The Flying Sound Company after being made redundant from his job at a bag wholesalers.

“Our aim is to put on more upmarket events. I don’t really want to be DJing in a muddy field so we’re looking at weddings, corporate events, private parties, that kind of thing.”

Nicki Hitchcock, library manager, said: “Bring your friends and become members of the library. Admission is free with your library card for you to get into your headphones and sing your head off and dance yourself dizzy.”
