THE town of Upton-upon-Severn is gearing up for the biggest and best Water Festival yet, during the August Bank Holiday weekend.

The theme for the free three-day event will be the Queen's 80th birthday and the founding of the Union Flag, so red, white and blue will be much in evidence, especially in the town's shop window displays.

Running from August 26 to 28, it will be opened by auctioneer and antiques expert Philip Serrell, who will also give antiques valuations and sign copies of his latest book, Sold To The Man With The Tin Leg.

Upton businesses were very generous with gifts for the grand raffle and about two dozen were left over after three splendid main prizes had been chosen, so these will be auctioned to boost festival funds.

Peter Webb, vice-chairman of Upton Tourism and Trade Association, said last year's experiment of building a stage on the old bridge abutment, instead of having it on the opposite river bank, had proved a great success.

"It was hugely popular with the performers and the audience liked it too, so we are going to do it again this year," he said. "I think we have a better mix of acts than ever before and stallholders have booked all the pitches along the riverside."

New this year will be the Wyvern Village, a special area of children's games and entertainments to be set up near the Swan Hotel by the Wyvern FM radio station.

"They have a sponsor who is going to bring a hot tub, so that should be a big attraction," said Mr Webb.

Highlights of the weekend will be Saturday night's spectacular firework display beside the river, Sunday's car boot sale on the playing field and Monday's fun dog show and boot sale, with plenty of rosettes and prizes for the winners.

A glossy programme giving details of all the events is to be produced this year for the first time.
