STUDENTS thrive and are happy at a Worcestershire High School an Ofsted report has outlined.

The government officers’ report on Tenbury High School has given the school an overall grade of good, and said that the pupils had a “supportive and stimulating environment”.

It said that one of the school’s many outstanding features was the way students take part in the life of the local community, such as helping to serve lunch to senior citizens.

The report on the school, led by headteacher Stuart Cooke, was carried out by reporting inspector Clive Kempton.

He said: “The wealth of opportunities for students to contribute to the school and local and national communities are impressive.

“This why students’ personal development and well-being and contribution to community cohesion are outstanding”.

The report said that students made good progress as they moved through the school, especially in science, the school’s chosen specialism, attaining standards above national averages by the time they leave.

He also praised the schools’ teaching and curriculum, and said that there was good leadership and management at all levels, with parents being very supportive of the headteacher, who ‘leads by example’.

He said: “In all lessons, relationships with staff and students are very positive. There is a tangible mutual respect. Teachers’ planning is very thorough and student behaviour is exemplary. Students look smart and have positive attitudes to their work.”

Tenbury High is much smaller than most secondary schools. Students come from a rural area that has some pockets of socio-economic disadvantage.

The proportion of students eligible for free school meals is lower than average.

The school has 10 pupils attending with moderate learning difficulties (MLD) and three with severe learning difficulties (SLD), and they are fully integrated into the life of the school.

The proportion of students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities is therefore slightly above average.

The vast majority of students are white British. Tenbury High School became a specialist science college in 2005 and an extended school in the same year. It holds a number of prestigious awards including the Eco Schools’ Green Flag, Investors in People, Healthy Schools, Financial Management Standards in Schools, Excellence in Enterprise Education Award, Sports Mark and Careers Mark.
