WELCOMES on a cold winter’s night don’t come much better than a warming smile and a roaring log fire.

And that’s just what two friends and I got when we arrived at the Peacock Inn, Boraston, near Tenbury Wells.

None of us had visited the place for quite some time and were pleasantly surprised.

The restaurant has a nice rustic feel and the menu, while a little pricey perhaps on some dishes, offers a good choice that’s high on quality and taste.

For starter, I had sweet and spicy tiger prawns served with marinated artichoke (£8.95). It was extremely tasty and could have been eaten as a main course. My friends both went for home-made chicken liver parfait served with pineapple relish (£5.95) which they assured me was very good but they did have to ask for bread because it was not served with toast.

For main courses one friend decided on chicken supreme stuffed with stilton, wrapped in parma ham and served with sweet potato (£12.95), which he said was a great balance of flavours and also a good portion size. My other companion had slow-cooked marinated rump of English lamb with creamed leeks and thyme jus (£14.50) which proved very succulent.

I had a vegetarian option – stuffed aubergine, grilled with cheese and served with a tomato and basil sauce (£9.95). It proved to be a good sized portion and it is a choice I would definitely make again.

We were also presented with a large selection of fresh winter vegetables, new potatoes and chips, which proved far too much for us to consume.

For dessert, I shared a warm chocolate volcano served with vanilla ice cream and a rich chocolate sauce (£5.95) and my other friend had a sorbet (£4.95).

The chocolate dish was very rich and we could only manage half of it but it was a warming way to end a good meal.

While the food at the Peacock was great I did feel the service could have been slightly more attentive considering there were only a few other people dining. It was little touches I felt needed improving – the sorbet came with a dessert spoon and a finger bowl for the prawns would have been nice.

However, our evening at the Peacock Inn proved a lovely choice and we will all have to visit again, soon.
